ACCELERATOR MASS SPECTROMETRY ISOTOPE SAMPLE
Description:

Queens College of New York (“QC” and/or “the College”) of the City University of New York (“CUNY” and/or “University”) intends to procure access to the following resources from a single vendor. This solicitation is being deemed a Single Source solicitation for the specific vendor: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (“LLNL-CAMS”).

The Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (“CAMS”) to provide 10BE sample analysis in the CAMS Recharge Facility as requested by the college.

Background:

The Lesnek Lab in the Queens College School of Earth and Environmental Sciences investigates the causes and consequences of past glacier variability, with particular emphasis on ice sheet response to abrupt climate change. A central component of our research agenda involves dating the timing of glacier retreat in formerly ice-covered regions, which we accomplish by measuring concentrations of certain chemical species, called cosmogenic isotopes, within rocks. In our rock samples, cosmogenic isotopes are present in extremely small quantities (e.g., a typical sample may contain fewer than 1,000 atoms of a particular isotope), and they must therefore be analyzed on a highly specialized instrument called an accelerator mass spectrometer.

LLNL-CAMS hosts a 10-MV FN tandem Van de Graaff accelerator that is capable of high throughput and high-precision analyses of multiple rare isotopes, including 10Be and 36Cl, which are the primary cosmogenic isotopes used in PI Lesnek’s research.

Prospective vendors must meet, at minimum, the functionality and product requirements detailed above in this advertisement and provide a letter from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (LLNL-CAMS) verifying their authority to provide these.
